Chapter Eighteen

WHEN I WAS BETWEEN clients again, I called Hal and arranged for him to install a deadbolt on the door to my cottage. He told me he would drop by after work, which suited me fine. I’d barely hung up from him when I received a call from Troy Ambrose. “Hi, Sheriff,” I said, hoping he wasn’t calling with bad news. “How did it go with Mitch last night?”

“It went about as well as I’d hoped,” he replied. “I contacted the owners and managed to get a spare key from one of their relatives. My deputies and I were waiting in the house when Mitch broke in. We arrested the whole gang and took them in for questioning. We hinted that we had eyes and ears everywhere and that their movements were being tracked. We kept them in overnight before releasing them with a final warning. Their ringleader left town and I don’t think he’ll be back.”

“How did Mitch take it?”

“I believe he realizes that a life of crime isn’t for him,” he said with an audible grin. “Spending the night in a jail cell will do that to a fourteen-year-old kid.”

“I hope Mrs. Lynam will be able to handle him.”

“I told her I’ll drop in occasionally. That should help keep Mitch in check. It’s hard for a boy not to have male guidance when he needs it.”

“You’re a good man, Sheriff,” I said sincerely. He’d lost his wife and daughter and had never remarried. It might be good for him to become involved in an aimless teen’s life.

“There’s another reason why I called,” he told me.

“What’s up?” It was possible Drew had told him about my most recent break-in.

“Lakeview was hit by the burglar last night,” he replied.

“Oh.”

“You sound almost disappointed. What were you expecting me to say?”

“I thought Drew might have told you about the photo that was left on my desk last night.”

“What photo?” he asked, all traces of amusement fleeing. I gave him a quick rundown and he heaved a sigh. “Make sure that new lock is installed in your home,” he suggested. “It won’t keep out someone who is persistent, but it’ll give you enough time to have your taser ready for him if he breaks in.”

“I’ve already arranged for a guy to install one,” I said, then changed the topic. “How many stores were robbed in Lakeview?”

“Five. The thief didn’t get away with much this time. If he’s really the man who murdered Nigel Kline, then I’m starting to think he’s leaving a trail for you to follow.”

“That’s what I was thinking, too,” Jess said. She had her ear pressed up against the phone so she could listen in.

“Do you think he’s trying to lure me to Lakeview?” I asked.

“It’s a possibility that we can’t discount.”

“What should I do?” I asked, trusting his judgement.

“Sheriff Anthony Zanco from Lakeview is a good guy. I’ll call him and fill him in on the situation. I’ll call Drew as well and see if he wants in on this.
